| Abstract |
The goal of DFIDs Abortion Care
Project, which commenced in April 1998 with
an £860,000 budget, was to reduce maternal
mortality and morbidity in South Africa due
to abortion complications. Its purpose
was to develop the capacity of provincial
health departments to provide more effective,
efficient and accessible abortion care services.
As reflected in the Project Progress Report,
all the objectively verifiable indicators
have been exceeded, as have the planned project
outputs, which have directly and significantly
contributed to the achievement of the project
purpose. As for the purpose to goal assessment,
while the capacity of provincial health departments
to provide abortion care as part of a package
of comprehensive reproductive health services
has definitely been developed and the severity
of morbidity related to abortions reduced,
there remains scope for further expanding
this capacity and the resultant reduction
of maternal mortality. |
