| Abstract |
In many countries there is no
policy or programme for control and prevention
of malaria in pregnant women. There are several
reasons for this. At local level there is
often poor communication between those responsible
for malaria and it is unclear where responsibilities
lie. At the same time there is a lack of expertise
to make this link and lack of funds to assist
in the process. At international level disagreement
between experts is slowing down progress despite
the fact that what is known already is enough
to move programs forward. Strategy options
include chemoprophylaxis, intermittent presumptive
treatment (IPT) and febrile case management
and bednets. Vaccines are still theoretical.
